Lab 8: Metabolism Flashcards
What is metabolism?
the sum of all of the chemical reactions that occur in an organism
what happens in a catabolic reaction
large organic molecules are broken down into smaller molecules, a process that usually releases energy (usually in the form of ATP).
What happens in an anabolic reaction?
small precursor molecules are assembled into larger organic molecules, a process that requires the input of energy (often as ATP).
Metabolic Rate
the amount of energy used by an animal within a specific period of time.
What two factors affect the metabolic rate in an animal?
- Body temperature
2. Body size
Endothermic
Warm blooded
Ectothermic
Cold blooded
The metabolic rate in individuals increases directly as a function of their ________?
weights. larger animals consume more oxygen
Do small or large animals consume more oxygen per gram of body weight?
smaller animals.
Cellular respiration
a process where energy is produced by the controlled oxidation of cellular fuels (carbohydrate, lipids and proteins), in short, oxygen and an organic molecule react to produce water, carbon dioxide and energy
What device can be used to determine oxygen consumption?
Oxygen Electrode or chemical titration
What is a respirometer?
an instrument for measuring oxygen consumption
what does an R^2 value indicate?
The R2 value indicates how well the regression line fits a set of data with a value of 1.0 being a very good fit.
