lab 8 Flashcards
1
Q
what are the three types of locomotion?
A
cilia, flagella or pseudopodia
2
Q
how do euglena eat?
A
- they are mixtrophs
- able to feed using both autotrophic and heterotrophic methods
- possess chloroplasts and are capable of autotrophic nutrition
- main source of nutrition is photosynthesis
- also possess a gullet and can ingest food particles
3
Q
algae
A
- large, multicellular organisms
- brown, red and green algae
- ARE photosynthetic but are NOT descended from a common ancestor and are found within two supergroups of the Eukarya
4
Q
why is algae three different colours?
A
- aquatic organisms and all possess chlorophyll a (some also have b and or c)
- water absorbs light, particularly the longer, red to yellow wavelengths, thus depriving chlorophyll a of much of the light energy it would normally absorb
- algae compensates for this by possessing accessory photosynthetic pigments that absorb more of the light available underwater
- accessory pigments give the seaweed different colours
- red accessory pigment phycoerythrin is common in red algae while the golden accessory pigment fucoxanthin is common in browns
5
Q
light in euglena
A
does not go to yellow/green filters
