lab 6 Flashcards
1
Q
archaea
A
- no nuclei
- ancient group of poorly-known prokaryotes
- live in extreme environments like thermal vents, salt springs, hot springs, swamps and marshes where other life forms are absent
2
Q
bacteria
A
- no nuclei
- better known
- consist of heterotrophic bacteria and a group of photoautotrophic bacteria Cynanobacteria (formerly known as blue green algae)
3
Q
what do archara and bacteria have in common? groups of prokaryotes
A
- no nuclei
- single stranded circular chromosome which is concentrated in one area of their cells (called the nucleoid) but not enclosed by a nuclear membrane. small size (1 to 10 micrometers)
- used to be classified under plantae but their cell walls do not contain cellulose and contain other molecules such as peptidoglycan
4
Q
how do you describe a bacterial colony (table)
A
- approximate size of colony
- overall shape of colony
- margin or edge of colony
- surface texture
- elevation of colony
- colour of colony
5
Q
what types of fungi and bacteria did we use?
A
bacteria: chromobacterium violaceum (purple in colour) and micrococcus luteus
fungi: rhizopus stolonifer (a filamentous mold) and saccharomyces cerevisiae (single celled yeast)
6
Q
nostoc
A
- belongs to a group of bacteria (cyanobacteria) whose cells are larger
- blue-green in colour
- nostoc forms filaments or chains of cells which adhere to each other by their gelatinous sheaths
- nitrogen fixing bacteria (makes inorganic nitrogen compounds from the free nitrogen found in the atmosphere)
