Lab 6: Submaximal Exercise Flashcards
Purpose of Lab
-can be used as a means for describing the aerobic fitness of an individual
- Allows for the prediction of VO2max based on heart rate (HR)
response at a given power (W) or submaximal oxygen consumption
General Trend
Linear: proportion at which HR increases in comparison to power
output or VO2 varies between individuals based on fitness
levels
Compared to Maximal Exercise Test
↓ Equipment cost
↓ Experimenter expertise
↑ Subject comfort
↓ Level of specificity required
Submaximal Exercise
Submax Tests
- Modified Harvard Step Test, YMCA Cycle Ergometer Test
Purpose of Submax Tests
gives a VO2 estimation
Modified Harvard Step Test
- measure a person’s aerobic fitness
- modified from maximal to submaximal test
How was the Harvard step test modified?
Uses Modified Astrand Rhyming Nomogram
- A two-dimensional diagram designed to allow the approximate graphical computation of a function
- VO2max is a function
Modified Harvard Step Test Instruction (remember the gist)
- Record resting HR, BP, & RPE
- Set up steps to the appropriate height: (a. Men: 15.5 inches b. Women: 13 inches)
- Inform participant of the testing procedure: (a. “This is a 5 minute step test. You will step to the beat of the metronome using the same
lead leg in an UP, UP, DOWN, DOWN rhythm. I will periodically ask for your rating of perceived exertion. Immediately following the test I will record your HR. If you’re ready to
begin, I will have you march in place to the metronome. Once I give you a 5 second countdown you may begin”) - Set metronome to 90 beats per minute. Once the participant is in rhythm, provide a 5 second countdown and start the test
- Record RPE every minute
- The test will continue for 5 minutes.
- After 5 minutes, immediately take a 20-second HR measurement
- Take BP & RPE
YMCA Cycle Ergometer Test
- Stage time: 3 minutes (total of 4 stages)
- Speed: 50 rpm (follow metronome)
- Grade: Begin at resistance of 0.5 kg and increase according to
steady state HR at the end of stage 1 (follow chart on slide 6) - Goal: Subject reaches 85% of their APHRmax
