Lab 6: Submaximal Exercise Flashcards

1
Q

Purpose of Lab

A

-can be used as a means for describing the aerobic fitness of an individual
- Allows for the prediction of VO2max based on heart rate (HR)
response at a given power (W) or submaximal oxygen consumption

Q

General Trend

A

Linear: proportion at which HR increases in comparison to power
output or VO2 varies between individuals based on fitness
levels

Q

How was the Harvard step test modified?

A

Uses Modified Astrand Rhyming Nomogram
- A two-dimensional diagram designed to allow the approximate graphical computation of a function
- VO2max is a function

Q

Modified Harvard Step Test Instruction (remember the gist)

A
  1. Record resting HR, BP, & RPE
  2. Set up steps to the appropriate height: (a. Men: 15.5 inches b. Women: 13 inches)
  3. Inform participant of the testing procedure: (a. “This is a 5 minute step test. You will step to the beat of the metronome using the same
lead leg in an UP, UP, DOWN, DOWN rhythm. I will periodically ask for your rating of perceived exertion. Immediately following the test I will record your HR. If you’re ready to
begin, I will have you march in place to the metronome. Once I give you a 5 second countdown you may begin”)
  4. Set metronome to 90 beats per minute. Once the participant is in rhythm, provide a 5 second countdown and start the test
  5. Record RPE every minute
  6. The test will continue for 5 minutes.
  7. After 5 minutes, immediately take a 20-second HR measurement
  8. Take BP & RPE

Q

YMCA Cycle Ergometer Test

A
  • Stage time: 3 minutes (total of 4 stages)
  • Speed: 50 rpm (follow metronome)
  • Grade: Begin at resistance of 0.5 kg and increase according to
steady state HR at the end of stage 1 (follow chart on slide 6)
  • Goal: Subject reaches 85% of their APHRmax
