Lab 5 Osmosis Flashcards
(19 cards)
What does selective permeable mean?
Only certain substances can diffuse across the lipid bilayer of a biological membrane.
Permeable
Allowing liquids or gases to pass through.
Nonpermeable
No gases or liquids can pass through
What molecules are permeable?
Oxygen, carbon dioxide, nonpolar lipids.
What molecules are Nonpermeable?
Ions and polar molecules.
Osmosis
The diffusion of water
Aquaporin
Selective transport proteins
Hydrophilic head
The part which is water loving of a lipid bilayer
Hydrophobic tail
Made up of saturated or unsaturated fatty acids. Repels water to protect the internal components of the cell.
Hypertonic
A solution has a higher concentration of solute
Hypotonic
A solution has a lower concentration of solute
Isotonic
A solution has an equal concentration of solute
During osmosis…
Water diffuses from the hypotonic side of a membrane to the hypertonic side of the membrane.
Plasmolysis
Shrinking of a cell due to osmosis
Plasmotysis
Bursting of a cell due to osmosis
Pigment molecules (chlorophyll)
Embedded in the thylakoid membrane of the chloroplast.
During the lab spinach pigments were separated using paper chromatography. The pigments were extracted with methanol.
Solvents wick up the paper, smaller pigment molecules will travel through the paper faster than larger molecules, thus separating them. (Chlorophyll b, chlorophyll a, xanthophyll, carotene)
Which potato slice in the lab was hypertonic
Water slice
Which potato slice was hypotonic in the lab
Corn syrup slice
