Lab #5 Organ ID Flashcards
What are the salivary glands responsible for?
to lubricate and start the process of digestion
Esophagus function?
tube connection between oral cavity and digestive tract
What is the stomach’s function?
- where food is temporarily stored
- digestion is initiated
What is the purpose of the small intestine?
Site of digestion and absorption of nutrients
What is the purpose of the cecum?
Houses bacteria that assists in breaking down cellulose.
What is the pancreas responsible for?
secretes digestive enzymes. (Also insulin production within the endocrine system)
What is the duodenum?
first portion of the small intestine
Where is the large intestine?
located after the small intestine. Most of large intestine is the colon, which extends from the small intestine to cecum or anus.
What is the rectum responsible for?
end of digestive tract where waste is excreted
What is the responsibility of the liver?
- Secretes bile that aids in digestion
- Detoxification of substances
- Metabolic process roles
What is the urogenital system?
reproductive organs and urinary system
What is the role of the kidneys?
- removal of waste products from blood
- production of urine
Adrenal gland function?
fight or flight.
Stress hormones
sexual development
metabolism of nutrients
What does the urethra do?
duct that carries urine from bladder to outside of the urogential tract
What is the urinary bladder?
stores urine from kidneys before being discharged
What is the diaphragm?
Chief muscle for respiration
What is the trachea?
respiratory connection between larynx and lungs. cartilage rings keep it open
Lung function?
gas exchange between air and blood
Heart function?
consists of ventricles and atria which pump blood throughout the body
What do carotid arteries do?
neck arteries. supply blood to cranium
(Carotid - Cranium)
What do the internal jugular veins do?
paired veins in neck. returns de-oxygenated blood from cranium to lungs
What does the renal artery do?
supplies oxygenated blood to kidneys
What does the renal vein do?
returns de-oxygenated blood from kidney to heart and lungs
What is the difference between a vein and artery?
Arteries carry blood AWAY from heart
Veins carry blood to the heart
Arteries are red
Veins are blue
What is the spleen responsible for?
- stores blood
- blood volume regulation
- removes dead blood cells
Generates white blood cells and antibodies to fight off infection
What is the vesicular gland responsible for?
production of seminal fluid
What is the prostate responsible for?
gland, surrounds urethra. Produces much of seminal fluid
What is the epididymis?
- band shaped tubules lying on testes
- where sperm matures and is stored
What are testes responsible for?
produce sperm and testosterone
What is the function of the scrotum?
houses testes
What is the function of the ovaries?
holds ovarian follicles and eggs
What is the function of the uterus?
where embryos develop
What does the term uterine horn mean?
The shape of the uterus in rats, so they can produce many offspring at once
Bipartite uterus
What does the term viviparous mean?
live born (ie. not an egg that needs to be hatched
Where is the cecum located?
pouch extending off of beginning portions of large intestine
Where is the stomach located?
located between esophagus and small intestine
Where is the small intestine located?
first portion of digestive tract after the stomach
What is the responsibility of the large intestine?
Absorb water and electrolytes.
Produce and absorb vitamins.
Propel feces towards rectum.
Where is the cecum located?
Right side of colon. Between small and large intestine
Where is the esophagus located?
Right behind trachea
Where are the adrenal glands located?
Pair of glands located anterior each kidney
Where is the spleen located?
immune system organ located near left side of stomach
Where is the prostate located?
Larger part just below bladder. Looks like it’s part of bladder/ same tissue as bladder. but is heart shaped
Where are the renal arteries and veins located?
Between kidneys and heart/lungs to transport blood to and from
Which 2 genital glands produce seminal fluid?
Vesicular gland
Prostate
Where is the diaphragm located?
Right below lungs
What does renal mean?
Kidney
Where are the jugular veins located?
On either side of trachea. Blue
Where are carotid arteries located?
Either side of trachea. Red
Where is liver bile stored?
Gallbladder
What keeps the trachea open?
cartilaginous or ossified rings
