Lab 4 - Tissues Flashcards
4 major types of tissues
Connective, epithelial, muscular, nervous
Simple (cell arrangement)
Single layer of cells
Stratified (cell arrangement)
Two or more layers of cells
Pseudostratified (cell arrangement)
Single layer of cells in which all cells attach to the basement membrane, but not all cells reach the free surface; gives the illusion of being stratified
Squamous (cell shape)
Flat, scale-like cells
Cuboidal (cell shape)
Cube-shaped cells
Columnar (cell shape)
Column-shaped cells
Transitional (cell shape)
Stratified epithelium in which apical cells change shape (cuboidal squamous) due to pressure applied by overlying liquid
Endothelium (location)
Simple squamous epithelium that forms the inner lining of vessels
Serous membrane (location)
Simple squamous epithelium lining cavities that have no connection with outside of body; secretes watery serous fluid; pleura, pericardium, peritoneum, mesentery
Mucous membrane (location)
Lines cavities that have connection with outside of body; goblet cells that secrete viscous fluid (mucus); forms inner linings of four organ systems: respiratory, digestive, urinary, reproductive
Cutaneous membrane (location)
Skin, including epidermis, which is stratified squamous epithelium overlying the true skin or dermis
