Lab 2 - Cells & Cell Cycle Flashcards
Cell cycle
All events in the life of a cell from the time the cell forms to the time when it divides and becomes two new cells
Parent cell
Cell that divides
Daughter cells
Two new cells from parent cell
Interphase
Refers to stage of the cell cycle between cell divisions, subdivided into three specific stages (G1, S, G2)
G1 Phase
Time when cell is carrying out basic metabolic activity & not preparing to divide
S Phase (Synthesis)
Refers to time when cell makes exact copies if its linear DNA molecules in a process called replication or duplication
Sister chromatids
Two complete DNA molecules within a replicated chromosome
Centromere
Temporarily hold sister chromatids to one another
Karyotype
Picture of an organism’s full complement of chromosomes
G2 Phase
Represents time when cell is making final preparations for division
Mitosis
Process leading up to a parent cell’s replicated, nuclear DNA molecules becoming equally distributed at opposite ends of the cell
(prophase, metaphase, anaphase, telophase)
Prophase
Immediately follows G1 of interphase
Metaphase
Stage when replicated chromosomes align themselves along the parent cell’s equator
Anaphase
Time when sister chromatids separate from one another & move toward opposite poles of the cell
Sister chromosomes
Separated chromatids
