Lab 4 Questions Flashcards

1
Q
  1. Why would one person have a greater force output than another for an electrical stimulus delivered to a muscle?
A

Because it is based off their twitchy property ties, one person could have more fast twitch meaning they could produce a greater force output when a stimulus is delivered
-more muscle mass causes someone to be stronger, also a cause

Q
  1. What enzymes in the muscle influence time to peak tension and relaxation time in response to a single electrical stimulus?
A

ATPase enzymes would influence time to peak tension and relaxation time
-as more myosin ATPase decreases time to peak tension
-and a higher SR ATPase influences reaction time causing it to be shorter

Q
  1. Within a single muscle fiber, what causes summation when action potentials are delivered to the muscle fibre membrane at higher and higher frequencies?
A

Summation is caused by a contraction of the muscle without time to relax
-calcium can’t be pumped out fast enough and is getting released from the SR at a continuous rate

Q
  1. What causes tetanus once a very high frequency of stim is reached?
A

Excess calcium release from the SR which binds to Troponin before the muscle can completely relax
-if all the sites are occupied/ fully saturated with Troponin, this is Tetanus

Q
  1. A) How does a single session of box jumping affect the twitch contractile properties of the legs measured two minutes later:
(Torque development, peak force, rate of relaxation)
A

Would decrease the twitch contractile properties due to fatigue of continuous use of the fibers causing them to lower in maximum force and velocity
-rate of relaxation would also decrease

Q
  1. What effect does 30 seconds of static stretching have on muscle twitch properties? What happens if the 30 second stretch is repeated several times?
A

It would decrease the twitch torque and force development because of fatigue and activation of the GTO, and would not reduce any further if the stretch was repeated several times
