lab 4 - preparation of an AL and Eu based on OLED material Flashcards
what is the purpose of this experiment?
to synthesize two inorganic OLED materials based on Al3+ and Eu 3+ and observe their luminescence under UV light
what is OLED?
an organic light emitting diode, a device that converts electrical energy into light, widely used in displays due to its advantage like high contrast, low power consumption, and flexibility
what are the two OLED materials being synthesized in this lab?
Al 3+: a green emitter
Eu 3+: a red emitter
what is the significance of the pH in this experiment?
the pH must be adjusted to specific levels (pH 8-9) using sodium carbonate or sodium hydroxide to ensure the proper formation of the complexes
why is the vacuum filtration step important
to isolate the solid products (Alq3 or EuTTA3Phen) and remove impurities from the reaction mixture
why is methanol used in these reactions?
methanol acts as solvent to dissolve the reactants and facilitates the reaction to from the desired complexes
what observations are critical during the experiment?
appearance of reactants and products, color changes, behaviour of products under UV light
how is pH measured during the experiment?
by using pH paper and comparing the color to the provided pH chart
how should waste be disposed in this experiment?
original solutions go into designated waste containers
wash water used to clean glassware can go down the sink
what does the success of the reaction depend on?
proper pH adjustment, accurate measurement of reactants, and thorough mixing of the solutions
why is europium used for re emission in OLDEDs?
europium complexes are among the brightest and most efficient and red emitters avaialable
