LAB 4 Histology Hazard Assessment Flashcards
Define risk
Calculated probability of harm and the severity of its consequence
Define hazard
Anything that can be a potential source of harm
Define hazard controls
Controls put in place to reduce/ eliminate the possibility of consequences of the hazard
List types of hazards
- Physical
- Chemical
- Biological
- Psychosocial
- Ergonomic
- Radiation
Who sets the rules and regulations to ensure a safe work environment in Alberta ?
Occupational Health and Safety Act
Identify the hierarchy of hazard controls from most effective to least effective (5)
- Elimination (most effective)
- Substitution
- Engineering
- Administration
- PPE
Give an example of an engineered control
- changes in equipment
- replacing processors that lifted tissue out of solution containers (which created fumes) with processors that pumps fluid in and out of a single chamber in a more enclosed way
Give an example of an administrative control
- changing how people work
- scheduling can limit physical hazards associated with repetitive motion (ie. to reduce frequency and duration)
What are the 4 main steps of performing a hazard assessment
- Identify the hazards
- Assess likelihood and severity of its consequences
- Determine control measures for each hazard
- Regularly review and revise the hazard assessment
How is Risk Rating calculated ?
RR = Likelihood (1 to 5) x Consequence (1 to 5) = maximum of 25
