Lab. 4 Flashcards
ORGANIC MOLECULES
Organic molecules contain
carbon
Organic molecules contain
carbon
macromolecules
carbohydrates, proteins, lipids, nucleic acids
Monosaccharides – simplest forms (monomer) of carbohydrates; glucose, fructose, galatose, etc
Disaccharides – two monosaccharides combined; sucrose (table sugar), lactose, etc
Polysaccharides – complex carbohydrates; starch, glycogen, cellulose
Carbohydrates
Carbohydrate Test
Benedict’s test
What is Benedict’s test?
Detects reducing sugars; usually monosaccharides and sometimes disaccharides
Carbohydrate Test
Iodine test
Iodine test
Detect polysaccharides like starch
Lipids
brown paper
1 glycerol + 3 fatty acids; most abundant lipids in living organisms
Triglycerides
Saturated
all carbons linked by single bonds
Tend to be solid at room temperature
Unsaturated
ontain one or more double bonds
Tend to be liquid at room temperature (known as oils)
Composed of carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, and small amounts of other elements
Proteins
Protein Test
Biuret reagent test
Carbohydrate Test
Benedict’s test
- Detects reducing sugars; usually monosaccharides and sometimes disaccharides
- Color changes vary with concentration(orange color is positive)
