Lab. 3 Flashcards
Cell Structure and Function
Porkaryotes
- Simple cell structure
- No nucleus
- Structures: cell membrane, cytoplasm, nucleoid region, chromosomes
Eukaryotes
- More complex
- DNA enclosed within membrane (bound nucleus)
- Membrane-bound organelles
Eukaryotic Cell include
the protists, fungi, plants, and animals
Protists
Diverse group of organism
- found in aquatic environments
- Plantlike protists (algae), fungus-like (slime and water molds) and animalike protists (protozoans)
Structures that are found only in plant cells
Cell wall, chloroplast, large vacuole
Solvent
agent that is used to dissolve material
Solute
dissolved substances
Concentration gradient
A difference between concentrations in space
Active transport
molecules move from low to high concentrations (energy required)
Diffusion
Type of passive transport in which molecules spread from areas of high concentration to areas of low concentration
Plasma membrane
- A phospholipid bilayer with embedded proteins
- selective permeable- a membrane prevents the passage of some substances but allows the passage of others
Osmosis
The diffusion of water across the membrane
tonicity
Relative concentrations of solutions that determine the direction and extent of osmosis
Osmolarity
measure of solute concentration
Hypotonoic
solution has lower solute (more water) than cell
