LAB 25: Antimicrobial Susceptibility Tests (Kirby test) Flashcards
what was the main focus of Lab 25?
Antimicrobial Susceptibility Tests (the Kirby test)
give a case study summary:
3 patients (A=staph, B= pseudomonas, x=postsurgical negative gram infection) have been ordered an antibiotic sensitivity test to see what will work best in each situation
how do you make a good lawn test?
make sure to cover the entire agar (line every inch of the agar)
what is the goal of sensitivity test?
To see if bacteria will be sensitive (killed) or resistant (ineffective) to antibiotic or intermediate (meaning it might work, it might not)
what is the Zone of Inhibition?
-Area where the antimicrobial inhibits the growth of the organism
-To measure, do the diameter of circle by millimeters then divide to get radius
-Bacteria with no zone=resistant to antimicrobial
what are the organisms we used in this lab?
Staphylococcus and Pseudomonas
