Lab 2-Scientific Measurements Flashcards
Qualitative
Describe a characteristic or a category of an object. Often do not require tools. Ex. Presence/absence, gender, texture, taste
Accuracy
Reflects how close a measurement or calculation is to the true value being measured
Precision
Reflects how reproducible or repeatable the measurement is.
Standard deviation applies only to:
Precision
Dynamic Range
The ratio between the smallest and largest possible values it can measure.
The greater the dynamic range of an instrument, the __________ its precision.
Higher
Replication of a measurement can be done by:
- measuring a single object multiple times
* measuring multiple similar objects a single time each
Mean reflects:
“best guess” at the true measurement
Standard deviation is a measure of:
Precision
Quantitative
Require some type of equipment: a ruler, digital scale, stopwatch. Must be expressed in the form of some unit: inch, mm, year, minute.
% error =
[(observed-expected) / (expected)] x 100
