Lab 2: Integument Flashcards
Explain the three major axes?
rostral to caudal= nose to tail
Dorsal to ventral= back to belly
Medial-lateral= middle to outside
Explain the three planes?
horizontal
cornal plane= cut through that eyes are one side and back of head the other
sagittal plane= cut down the nose
Integument=
skin
What are the two secretory cells?
mucoid-produces muscus
proteinaceous=produces slime or poison
Three layers of integument?
Functions?
epidermis, dermis, hypodermis
protection, barrier, sensory functions, regulator
Epidermis
-what layer
-top layer of epidermis is called?
-what is in epidermis?
-what is the bottom layer of epidermis?
Episdermis is the surface layer of integument
-stratum corneum outermost layer
-Keratins found inside
-a-kertin:hair, nails, horns
-b-keratin- feather, scales, claws, beaks
stratum germinativum-deepest layer and main site of cell division
Horn vs Antlers
Horns dont fall off and are covered by keratin
Antlers shed every year and is made entirely of bone, is an extension of the skull
Dermis
-meshwork of ___:—-
-top layer?
-Thickest main layer?
Contains?
What’s beneath?
fibers:collagenous and elastic
stratum spongiosum
stratum compactum
-mechanoreceptos, nerves, blood vessels
hypodermis(connective and adipose tissue)
What are the unique components of the integument found in each of the different major groups?
Fish=produce mucus for smooth swimming
amphibans=have poisionus glands
Reptiles=epidermus is overlapping scales called scutes
Birds=feathers from epidermis
mammals=sweat glands
