Lab 2: Evolutionary Mechanisms Flashcards
What is Genetic Drift?
Change in allele frequency from one generation to the next due to chance
What is Fixation?
A population reaches this when an the allele reaches a frequency of 0 or 1
What is Natural Selection?
It is a by which the environment causes differential reproductive success of alternative phenotypes. (Survival of the fittest)
-Its the most critical mechanism that changes allele frequencies.
What is fit?
-Contributes more to the next generation
What is fitness?
successful reproduction
What is directional selection?
selection that favors individuals of one extreme phenotype.
What is stabilizing selection?
intermediate or average phenotypes are favored more for survival and reproduction.
What is Disruptive Selection?
favors individuals at each end of a range of phenotypes over those that have intermediate phenotypes
What is Assortatative Mating?
when individuals select mates with particular heritable traits that are similar to their own phenotypes.
What is Disasssortative Mating?
-Is a form of nonrandom mating in which individuals seek mates that have different phenotypes from themselves.
