Lab 1: Population Genetics Flashcards
What is evolution?
Long term change in the genetic makeup of a population over generations.
What is a populations?
a group of individuals that live together in a specific geographic area and reproduces.
What is a gene pool?
All the genetic information distributed among all the individuals of a population is collectively called a gene pool.
What is allele frequency?
Is the portion of a particular allele for a particular gene in the gene pool of a population.
What is Population Genetics?
is the branch of biology that deals with the genetic makeup of populations.
What is genotype frequency?
is the portion of a particular genotype in a population.
The genotype frequencies for one gene with two alternative allels can be written as:
p^2 + 2pq + q^2 = 1
The allele frequencies for one gene with two alternative alleles can be written as:
p + q = 1
