Lab 2: Blood Components and Tests Flashcards
Function of blood:
Maintains homeostasis, transport system, regulates pH, repair blood clots, prevents disease, regulates body temperature
Amounts of Blood
Female: 4-5 Litres
Male: 5-6 Litres
Erythrocytes: RED BLOOD CELLS
Contain hemaglobin (oxygen carrying protein)
Transports O2 and CO2
No nucleus, can not divide, can not reproduce or repair
Lifespan 100-120 days
PLATELETS
Small cell fragments of megakaryocytes from bone marrow
Clotting time: 2-6 minutes
LEUCOCYTES: White Blood Cells
Never Let Moneys Eat Bananas: ranking of most common
Divided into two categories: granulocytes and agranulocytes
Differentiated by size, nucleus shape, colour when stained, shape of granule, amount of ctyoplasm
Neutrophils
Granulocyte: (10-12 pm)
Dark, multilobed nucleus.
Light pink or purple granules
Most Common of Leucocytes
Lymphocytes
Agranulocyte
Small cell with dark nucleus taking up most of the cell
Monocytes
Agranulocyte
Dark coloured kidney shape nucleus,
Eosinophil
2 lobe nucleus with bright pink granules.
Basophil
Contains dark purple or black granules
