Lab 2 Flashcards
Diffusion and Osmosis
What do we call the phenomenon of all atoms and molecules constant motion?
Heat
Diffusion
Occurs in all stages - the random motions of molecules from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration
Osmosis
Diffusion of water across a selectively permeable membrane
Osmotic pressure
Pressure that can be produced by the osmosis of water
Hyperosmotic
If one solution has a greater solute concentration that that of the second solution, the first solution is hyperosmotic to the second.
Hypoosmotic
If one solution has a greater solute concentration that that of the second solution, the second solution is hypoosmotic to the first.
Isosmotic
Two equally concentrated solutions are isomostic.
Plasmolysis
The shrinking of a living cell due to osmotic water loss.
Turgid
The swelling of a plant cell - doesn’t burst do to rigid cell wall
Turgur Pressure
Pressure caused by osmosis - supports non-woody plants
Independent Variable
The factor that you manipulate
Dependent Variable
The factor you measure that varies in response to the manipulated variable.
