Lab #2 Flashcards
What is a frequency histogram?
It is a bar graph that shows the frequency of a certain trait in a certain population. (Ex: eye color in a classroom IQ of students in a classroom)
What are data distributions?
Data that is plotted can be put into specific patterns. These patterns are referred to as distributions.
What is a normal distribution?
The curve is right in the middle. More favored in the middle. (Ex: height of students in the classroom.)
What is a skewed distribution?
When data shows that it favors more on the left extreme or the right extreme. (remember that skewed right means that the graph curves on the left side and skewed left means that the curve is on the right side)
Ex: White mice do better than the Black mice and brown mice.
What is Bimodal Distribution?
When data shows that two types of characteristics are favored and make an “M” shaped graphs.
What is natural selection?
Occurs when individuals with specific traits survive and reproduce more than other traits.
What is mutation?
Adds variation into populations due to random changes in DNA.
What is Genetic Drift?
Change in individual composition of populations due to random effects of sampling.
Ex: A random windstorm may blow a random group of beetles from mainland Florida to an island on the Florida Keys.
