Q

What is a spore

A
  • refers to a single cell that is in a state of semi dormancy
  • under the right conditions, the spore will divide and grow into a later and more active form of the organism
  • structurally distinct from sex cells; sperm, egg cells

Q

Differences between bacterial spores vs plants and mold spores?

A
  • All bacteria are haploid; bacteria reproduce only asexually ( binary fission); there is no diploid part of their lifecycle, unlike for plants and molds.
  • Bacterial spires do no grow into multicellular structures, since bacterial are unicellular organisms

Q

What is a vegetative cell?

A
  • metabolically active cells

- cells that are taking in nutrients, building biological molecules, releasing water, and dividing (reproducing)

Q

What is sporulation?

A
  • similar to binary fission
  • A copy of a bacterial chromosome is made. The cell then divides, creating 2 cells.
  • one of the cells in smaller than the other; the smaller cell is destined to become an endospore, later engulfed by the larger cell.
  • chemical composition changes; nearly all water is removed and accumulates organic acids,
  • sporulating cell develops thick coat

Q

What is germination?

A
  • when a bacterial endospore takes on water, expels its organic acid preservative, and converts into a metabolically active (vegetative) cell
