Lab 1 - The Cell Flashcards
Plasma Membrane
Function: controls what enters and exits the cell
Microvillus
Function: increases cell surface area for absorption
Nucleus
Function: controls cellular activity
Nucleolus
Function: produces ribosome components
Chromatin
Function: contains hereditary information; condenses into chromosomes during cell division
Nuclear Pore
Function: allows movement of substances between nucleus and cytoplasm
Cytoplasm
Function: intracellular organelles and cytosol that surround nucleus; aka all materials between plasma membrane and nucleus
Cytosol
Function: a part of the cytoplasm, this component of cytoplasm that provides support to internal cell structures
Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum
Function: processes amino acid chains made by attached ribosomes
Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum
Function: detoxification; also makes lipids and steroid hormones
Ribosome
Function: site of protein synthesis
Golgi Apparatus
Function: packages and ships proteins and lipids
Vesicle
Function: transports substances within a cell
Lyososome
Function: digests damaged organelles and substances brought inside cell
Mitochondrion
Function: energy (ATP) production
