Anatomical Position
Position is used as an anatomical reference in which the body is upright in a supine, anterior position. The upper limbs are at the body’s sides and the palms of the hands face forward. The feet are flat and directed forward
Superior
toward the head or upper part of a structure; this is NOT used on limbs
Inferior
away from the head or toward the lower part of a structure; this is NOT used on limbs
Anterior (Ventral)
toward or at the front of the body
Posterior (Dorsal)
toward or at the back of the body
Medial
toward the midline
Lateral
away from the midline
Proximal
closer to the point of attachment (of the limb to trunk of body)
Distal
farther from the point of attachment (of the limb to trunk of body)
Deep
away from the body surface; more internal
Superficial
toward the body surface
