Q

Frontal plane = Coronal plane

A

divides the body into anterior and posterior parts

17
Q

Transverse plane = Cross section = Horizontal plane

A

divides the body into superior and inferior points

18
Q

Oblique plane

A

passes though the body on an angle between the transverse plane and either a sagittal or frontal plane

19
Q

Body Cavity

A

spaces within the body that house, protect and separate internal organs

20
Q

Cranial cavity

A

encases the brain

21
Q

Vertebral = Spinal Cavity

A

encloses the spinal cord

  • runs within the bony vertebral column
  • continuous with the cranial cavity
22
Q

Thoracic Cavity

A
formed by the ribs, muscles of the chest, the breast bone and chest portion of the spine.
-houses the HEART and the LUNGS
divided into:
pericardial cavity
2 pleural cavities
mediastinum
23
Q

Pericardial cavity

A

surrounds the heart

24
Q

2 pleural cavities

A

surround each lung

25
Q

Mediastinum

A

cavity between the lungs that contains all thoracic organs except the lungs themselves (heart, esophagus, trachea, thymus, and several large blood vessels)

26
Q

Abdominopelvic cavity

A

extends from the diaphragm to the groin and is encircled by the abdominal wall and bones and muscles of the pelvis

  • the two cavities, abdominal and pelvic, are not separated by a membrane or wall
  • contains abdominal and pelvic cavity
27
Q

Abdominal cavity

A

contains most of the large intestine, small intestine, stomach, liver, spleen, and gallbladder

28
Q

Pelvic cavity

A

contains portions of the large intestine, urinary bladder and the internal reproductive organs

29
Q

Retroperitoneal

A

external to the lining of the abdominal portion of the abdominopelvic cavity

  • kidneys
  • pancreas
