Lab 1 Flashcards
What is experimental design?
Discovery science and hypothesis-based science
What is an independent variable?
The factor that the researcher controls to see how it affects the outcome
What is a dependent variable?
What is measured or observed to access how it is influenced by independent variable
What is a controlled variable?
The aspects of an experiment that is intentionally kept unchanged for validity
What is a negative control?
A group that is used as a reference and receives no treatment
What is a positive control?
A group that receives a treatment that is expected to produce an anticipated response
What are levels of treatment?
Multiple experimental groups excluding positive and negative controls
How do you do scientific notation?
You move the decimal to after the first non-zero digit and count number of moves
What are sig figs?
Essentially zeros are significant as long as they aren’t place holders for the decimal
What is the rule of addition?
Same number of decimal places as the value with the least amount of decimal places
What is the rule of multiplication?
Same number of sig figs as the value with the least amount of sig figs
What is an estimated digit?
1 estimated digit when measuring
What is the rule for measuring liquid volume?
Beakers and Erlenmeyer flasks are not accurate
