DNA Replication Flashcards
What is a complementary base pairing?
Nitrogenous bases in a double strand of DNA (Adenine/Thymine and Cytosine/Guanine)
What is anti parallel?
When the DNA strands run in opposite directions
What is semiconservative replication?
Complementary strands are separated and used as a template to synthesize 2 new complementary strands
What is the role of DNA Polymerse III?
It catalyzes the addition of DNA nucleotides to growing daughter strands
What is the role of helicase?
It separates parental double helix (=template)
What is the role of primase?
It initiates synthesis of new strands by creating an RNA primer
What is the role of Single Strand Binding Protein?
It keeps DNA separated
What is the role of ligase?
It joins Okazaki fragments
What direction is the daughter strand synthesized in?
It is created from 5’ to 3’
What end of the daughter strand are nucleotides added to?
The 3’ end
What are leading strands and why are they important?
They allow continuous synthesis of daughter strand and serves as the template for DNA replication
What are lagging strands and why are they important?
They are put together in fragments and facilitate the inheritance of DNA and enable proper cell functions
