LA - Dental LA Regional Blocks Flashcards
inferior alveolar nerve block - aim to deposit LA where?
close to inferior alveolar nerve, before it enters the mandible via mandibular foramen
what are the components of the pterygomandibular space?
hint: lateral, medial, posterior, anterior, superior components
lateral: ramus
medial: medial pterygoid
posterior: parotid + CN9
anterior: buccinator
superior: lateral pterygoid
IAN block - which two landmarks to inject between
2 imaginary lines:
- coronoid notch of mandible
- pterygomandibular raphe (mouth must be open wide to identify)
avoid carrying out bilateral IAN blocks - why?
numbing both sides results in loss of control of tongue and lips - not good
which regional block is similar to that of IAN blocks?
lingual nerve blocks, region to inject is the same. injection should hit both nerves but this does not always occur
long buccal nerve block - inject at which region?
used for?
- buccal side, posterior to last tooth
- for extraction and to numb buccal tissue
mental/incisive nerve block - inject where?
between apices of 4 and 5, area below tooth apex, towards mental foramen
