Folllicular phase varies and Luteal Phase is constant
Mechanism of Progetserone OC?
thicken cervical mucus and at some levels inhibits LH surge
How does Estrogen work in OC?
helps to decrease bleeding effects of Progestin (allows some buildup) and suppresses FSH ffrom anterior pituitary to lessen changes of ovulation
OC pills effects on TEstosterone levels? Mechanism? Effects?
Exogenous hormones increase Sex-Binding hormone globulin which binds everything including testosterone and so less circulating testosterone
Therefore decreased libido but impoved acne
When is emergency contraception effective and what is it?
high dose progesterone to inhibit LH surger and only effective if used before Ovulation
does NOT affect implantation
Vasomotor symptoms of menopause?
Hot flashes
sporadic peripheral vasodilation in face and upper neck resulting from Hypothalamic Dysfunciton (narrow thermoregulatory zone) so small rise in body temp perceived as huge and get sweating etc
What are the Hormone replacement therapeis?
Systemic Estrogen - tx for hot flashses

Progesterone - Endometrial protection needed w/ Estrogen bc of hyperplasia and cancer
vs
Vaginal estrogen which is local and dont need progesterone w/ it
HRT makes what better and what worse?
HRT makes fracture risk and diabetes and mortality better
Increased Risk of Cholecystitis!!!
Recomendations for HRT?
SYMPTOMATIC WOMEN - start early (more risk in older women)
use lowest effective dose
Wean within 5 years of menopause (E only within 7)
Use Progesterone w/ Estrogen
