L8 - Mitosis Flashcards
What are the 5 stages of mitosis?
interphase
prophase
metaphase
anaphase
telophase
What happens in the prophase?
4
Chromosomes become visible (chromatin condenses)
Nuclear membrane breaks down
Nucleolus disappears
Centrioles migrate to poles
What happens in the metaphase?
2
Chromosomes line up centrometers on the equator of the cell (1 straight line)
Centrioles form spindle fibres which attach to centrometers
What happens in the anaphase?
2
Spindles shorten + break apart sister chromatids
Daughter chromosomes migrate to poles
What happens in the telophase?
3
Nuclear membranes + nucleoli reform
Chromosomes disperse (back into chromatin)
Cytokinesis begins
What is mitosis needed for?
growth of multicellular organisms
repairing damaged tissues
What is mitosis?
it happens during the cell cycle
a parent cell divides to produce 2 genetically identical daughter cells
