L8 - Interference Flashcards
Define forgetting
When a person isn’t able to recall information or recognise something they’ve previously learnt
What is the interference theory?
Forgetting happens when two lots of memory are confused
Usually when two pieces of info are similar
What is retroactive interference?
When new learning interferes with recalling old information learnt
What is proactive interference?
When old learning affects the ability to recall new information
When is interference less likely to occur?
When there’s a gap between when two pieces of information are learnt
Advantage of the theory related to word lists?
Participants who learned 10+ lists recalled 20% of words next day
Those who learned 1 recalled >70%
Advantage related to proactive interference (1)?
Participants had to learn a list until they could recall 100% accurately
Given another list of either synonyms or original or antonyms
Findings of proactive interference research advantage?
Those who were given synonym list had worst recall
Learning two lists with similar meanings caused interference
Disadvantage?
Retrieval failure Is better
Divers learnt a list on dry land or water
Words learnt and recalled in same context recalled better due to cues
