L12 - Cognitive Interview Flashcards
What are the 4 stages?
Context reinstatement
Report everything
Recall from changed perspective
Recall in reversed order
What is context reinstatement?
Witnesses mentally recreate the situation, e.g. weather and how they were feeling
What is report everything?
Witnesses report every single detail they remember, regardless of if they think it’s insignificant
What is recall from changed perspective?
Recall from perspective of someone else present
May be birds eye view to enhance recall
What is recall in reversed order?
Witness recalls what they state backwards to ensure what was said in ‘report everything’ was accurate
What is a different version of the cognitive interview?
Enhanced cognitive interview
What was added in the enhanced cognitive interview?
Give non-verbal cues to show attention
Encourage witness to speak slow and clear
Give comments to clarify statement
Advantage related to participants being shown a simulation?
Recall tested using standard, cognitive, hypnosis
Cognitive had best recall
+ related to study of American detectives
When detectives had been trained to use it, witnesses reported more detail in accounts - 90% was accurate, 46% more detail
Disadvantage?
Researcher found that cognitive interview produced more incorrect info than the standard interview
More detail may mean more mistakes
