- Sovereignty referendum #1: Should Quebec become an independent state?
- fails: 60% No and 40% yes
-PM Pierre Trudeau responded by offering ‘renewed federalism’ . This was more autonomy and independence for all provinces

- Constitution updates
- decisive break with the UK
- Quebec the only province or territory to not accept the charter
Describe 1987 Quebec/Canada Relations
- Meech Lake accord: meeting with all the provinces, goal of modifying the constitution to improve it and get Quebec to join, proposed a reform of the senate
- not all 10 provinces support so the motion fails (objections from the West coast and the maritimes)
- Bloc Quebecois forms (federal party, formed to push for sovereignty at the federal level)

- Quebec holds sovereignty referendum #2: close vote but no side one
- Parti quebecois is in power again
Describe 2000-2006 Quebec/Canada aftermath
2000 Clarity act: response to referendums, wanted clear questions, clear majority, and not much talking on the whole issue, require constitutional amendment (approval of all provinces and territories)
2006: symbolic national recognition from Stephan Harper of Quebec and the Quebecois as a distinct nation within Canada
