L8 - ducks model of relationship breakdown Flashcards
what are the 4 phases of ducks model
intrapsychic
dyadic
social
grave dressing
what is the intrapsyhic phase
dissatisfied person thinks privately about rs
feels they are under-benefitting
depressed and withdraws from social interactions
does not say anything to partner
thinks they are better off not in the rs
what is the dyadic phase
private confrontation with partners
communicate about problems/perceived inequities and think about investments
could be reconciliation if other partner accepts validity and changes behaviour
or one partner may feel justified in withdrawing from rs and breakdown continues
what is the social phase
breakup made public to friends and family
younger- experience frequently, older - experience less frequently
involves criticising former partners
what is the grave dressing phase
mourning and justification of actions
ex partners publicise how rs broke down, stories told and interpretations of how it ended
2 strengths of ducks model
- duck recognised temporal validity, introduced resurrection stage, engages in personal growth and prepares for new romantic rs
- supports SET, high costs and minimal rewards = end rs, can analyse model from perspective of rewards and costs - links to SET
2 weaknesses of ducks model
- gender differences - females emphasise unhappiness, lack of emotional support and incompatibility for why it ended, men state lack of sex/fun. females want to stay friends, men do not. model needs to acknowledge gender differences
- reductionist/ not accurate - reduced to 4 simple stages in order, unlikely that this could happen, rs breakdown is unpredictable and happens in diff orders. e.g. break up make up break up etc
