L8 - Biological Approach Flashcards
1
Q
What are Neurotransmitters?
A
They release chemicals that allow neurons to communicate with each other
Psychologists say that neurotransmitter levels can affect behaviour
e.g low serotonin = depression
2
Q
What are Hormones?
A
- Released as part of the endocrine system via glands
- Biopsychologists argue that hormone levels can affect behaviour
e.g high testosterone = aggressive behaviour
3
Q
Evaluation (+)
A
+ Uses scientific methods + highly controlled methods = replicable + reliable
+ Has practical applications e.g drugs for depression like SSRIs for low serotonin
+ If people know they have a genetic predisposition to a certain disorder, then they know not to trigger it environmentally, or how to develop coping skills
4
Q
Evaluation (-)
A
- Biologically reductionist: you cannot break it down without taking into account other factors like cognitive, emotional and cultural factors.
- Some studies suggest a genetic basis for criminal behaviour, and could lead to genetic screening of populations and subsequent discrimination.
