L7 - Ionic Compounds Flashcards
what are ionic compounds?
metal + non-metal
what is a compound?
when different elements join or bond together
What is ionic bonding?
when ions are held together by electrostatic attraction
How are ions formed?
when 1 or more electrons are transferred from one atom to another
the simplest ions are simple atoms which have either lost or gained electrons so they have a full outer shell
what are the 5 compound ions + their formulas?
Sulfate - SO4 *2-
hydroxide - OH *-
Nitrate - NO3 *-
Carbonate - CO3 * 2-
Ammonium - NH4 *+
What is the structure of an ionic compound?
a giant lattice composed of positive and negative ions with electrostatic attractions between them
What properties do ionic compounds have?
3
high melting/boiling points
conduct electricity when dissolved or molten
brittle
Why do ionic compounds have a high melting/boiling point?
because they have strong electrostatic bonds, lots of energy needed to break
Why can ionic compounds conduct electricity when dissolved or molten?
Because the ions that carry the current are free to move in liquid state
Why are ionic compounds brittle?
Because the lattice is alternating positive + negative ions
so a blow makes them move next to ions with the same charge
