CN I
Olfactory Sensory Smell
What are the 5 pure motor cranial nerves?
Occulomotor, trochlear, abducens, accessory spinal, hypoglossal
CN VII
Facial Nerve
Sensory & Motor
Motor (Proper - Branchial Motor) - muscles of facial expression + 3 others Motor (Intermediate) - parasympathetic = lacrimal, sublingual & submandiblar salivary glands
Sensory (intermediate) - taste (anterior 2/3s tongue) and soft palate
Glossopharyngeal Nerve
CN IX Sensory & Motor Motor - stylopharyngeus & parotid gland (parasympathetic) Sensory - Taste (Posterior 1/3 tongue), general sensation of pharynx, middle ear & carotid body
Vagus Nerve
CN X Sensory & Motor Mostly autonomic - organs from pharynx to abdomen Motor - many striated muscles - soft palate, pharynx, larynx, upper oesophagus, 1 tongue muscle Sensory - pharynx, larynx & oesophagus Visceral - input from baro- and chemoreceptors of aortic arch Important in Gag reflex
Accessory Spinal Nerve
CN XI Motor Sternomastoid & upper part of trapezius
Nuclei location
d
Trochlear Nerve
CN IV Motor Superior oblique muscle of eye
Vestibulocochlear nerve
CN VIII Sensory Orientation & motion, hearing
CN VIII
Vestibulocochlear Nerve Sensory Orientation & motion, hearing
CN X
Vagus Nerve Sensory & Motor Mostly autonomic - organs from pharynx to abdomen Motor - many striated muscles - soft palate, pharynx, larynx, upper oesophagus, 1 tongue muscle Sensory - pharynx, larynx & oesophagus Visceral - input from baro- and chemoreceptors of aortic arch Important in Gag reflex
Gag Reflex
d
Hypoglossal
CN XII Motor Intrinsic & extrinsic muscles of tongue (except palatglossus)
Occulomotor
CN III Motor Movement of the eye - colliery muscles, sphincter of pupil & all extrinsic eye muscles (except superior oblique & lateral rectus)
