L6 - Quasi-Experimental & Correlational Designs Flashcards
1
Q
What are the three ways of doing psychology?
A
- Research: applied and basic
- Practice: qualitative/quantitative
- Policy
2
Q
What are the goals of psychological research?
A
- Description: identifies sequences of psychological events
- Prediction: following a regular pattern
- Explanation: causal relationship
- Application: informs actions/decisions
3
Q
What are the two disciplines?
A
- Experimental research (manipulated variables)
- Correlational Research (subject variables)
4
Q
What are subject variable?
A
- Attributes that exist before the study or occur naturally during it e.g age, phone use, etc.
- Can change if the same ppt comes through on two sep days
- You are not in control, the ppt comes into the room with them.
5
Q
What are Quasi-experimental designs?
A
- Contains a manipulated variable (IV)
- Also contains a subject variable
- Cannot be randomly assignment as it can not be manipulated.
- Can there be a third variable affecting the observed relation? Cant say causal
6
Q
What are correlational designs?
A
- Involves 2+ variables that you DO NOT manipulate experimentally.
- Stats technique
- Has third variable issues
- Correlation does not equal causation
