L6- Provisional Restoration Flashcards
why a restoration needs a provisional?
- to protect prepared teeth
- keep the patient comfortable
- as a blueprint for the final restoration
- by successful tx with provisional restoration dentist can get the patient confidence which is an influencing factor for success in the final restoration
ideal 3 basic requirements for provisoinal
- biological
- esthetic
- mechanical
biologic requirements for temp
- pulp protection
- periodontal health
- positional stability
- prevention of fracture
esthetic requirements of provisionals
- color compatibility
- translucency
- color stability
mechanical requiremetns of provisional
- functional
- retentive
- ease of removal
pulp protection - describe
part of biologic requirements
during tooth prep the dental
tubules are exposed, thus a provisonal restoraation should protect the prepared tooth from oral environment, therby preventing sensitivity and irritation to pulp
periodonta health - breakdown
part of biologic requirements
- it should have good marginal fit, proper contour and smooth surface to prevent accumulation of plaque, facilitate easy plaque removal and maintain periodontal health
- it should not violate the biologic width to avoid gingival inflammation
positional stability
part of biologic requirements
- it should provide comfortable, stable, and functional occlusal relationship by maintaining inter and intra-arch stability therby preventing tooth migration, supra-eruption
prevention of fracture
part of bio requireemtns of temp
- it should protect the prepared tooth surface from fracture which is commonly seen in partial coverage restoration, in which margin of preparation is close to the occlusal surface of tooth and could be damaged during chewing
functional requrement
part of mechaninal reqiurement
- it should possess good compressive and flexural strength
- the strength of material used for fabricating provisional restoration is alway lower than that of the definitive restorative material
serves as a blueprint for final occlusion
loss of retention
part of mechanical
- it should have close adaption to the prepared tooth surface to prevent displacement and recementation, which will increase patient visits
ease of removal
part of mechanical requirement
- provisional restoration may need to be removed and recemented often
- if they are well fabricated with adequate thickness and cemented with weak cement can be removed without breakage
esthetic requrement
it should match the shape, size, color, and texture of the resotred tooth especially in the anterior region
color stability is also important if the provisional are to function for a prolonged period
it also serves as a guide to achieve aesthetics to the final restoration
classification according to method of fabricaton
prefabricated - shell
custom made – processed
classification according to material used
resin –
custom made
resin materials
preformed (polycarb, cellulose acetate)
custom made materials
acrylics, bis acryl composite
polycarbonate crowns
they combine micro-glass fibers with polycarbonate plastic material
it is used as a matrix around a prepared tooth
avaialble in shape of incisor, canine, and premolars in varying size
cellulose acetate
is thin, soft, transparent scaffold material
it is available in all tooth shape and different sizes
an approximatley size of this crown is selected from a mould guide and filled with auto-polymerizating resin of appropriate shade
this is inserted over the lubricated prepared tooth
direct methods
putty matrix
vacuum shell / suck down
block temp
indirect method
processed provisional
musts for large edentulous spaces?
a record base and bite rim must be fabricated on the model you intend to mount for the patient with large edentulous spaces
facebow allows for
proper position of midline to facial landmarks as well as proper cant of adjacent teeth
breakdown of needs when communicating with lab
- what are you sending
- was it mounted? - if so on what?
- types of prosthetic restorative support yu need
- fixed, removable, CAD/CAM - materials available - specific information
- shade - type of finish
- polished, glazed, bisque - desired lab case turn around time
most important features dentists look for when choosing a laboratory
- high quality work
- good communicaton
- reasonable prices
- easy relationship
- fast turnaround time
type of finish
when and what
- polished
- glazed
- bisque
can you do suc down over wax up
no
pick up impressions done when?
after do frame try in
try in and make model of it - with GC resin
master cast aka
die cast
