Middle cerebral artery

A

Supplies the lateral cerebral cortex which represents the upper limb in the homunculus

  • lateral frontal and parietal lobe
  • superior temporal lobe

Q

Internal carotid artery branches

A

Ophthalmic artery - supplies orbit
Anterior cerebral artery - arches over the corpus callosum and supplies medial cerebral hemispheres
Middle cerebral artery - supplies lateral cerebral cortex and deep white matter

Q

Pontine arteries

A
  • supply the anterior surface of the pons and anterior motor pathways
  • very small so highly susceptible to damage

Q

Anterior spinal artery

A
  • Supplies the anterior 2/3rds of the spinal cord

- can get stroke of the spinal cord commonly due to post surgery aneurysm

Q

Vertebral artery

A
  • The 2 vertebral arteries come together to form the basilar artery in the midline
  • The basilar artery bifurcates to form the posterior cerebral arteries

Q

Posterior cerebral artery

A

Deep branches supply the thalamus:

  • thalamoperforator arteries
  • thalamogeniculate arteries
  • occlusion can affect samatosensation

Anterior branches run backwards supplying the midbrain and brain stem

Supplies back of cerebrum - occipital lobe and inferior temporal lobe
Occlusion can affect vision

Q

Lenticulostriate vessels

A

Very small branches of the middle cerebral artery supplying the:

  • caudate nucleus
  • lentiform nucleus
  • internal capsule
  • putamen and globus pallidus

Posterior circulation

A

Supplied by the vertebral arteries

Supplies the cerebellum, brainstem some of the temporal lobe and the occipital lobe
