L6 - Arterial Supply Of Brain Flashcards
Arterial supply of brain structure
Circle of Willis
Anterior cerebral artery
Supplies medial cerebral cortex which represents the lower limbs in the homunculus
Middle cerebral artery
Supplies the lateral cerebral cortex which represents the upper limb in the homunculus
- lateral frontal and parietal lobe
- superior temporal lobe
Anastomoses between anterior cerebral arteries
Anterior communicating artery
Internal carotid artery branches
Ophthalmic artery - supplies orbit
Anterior cerebral artery - arches over the corpus callosum and supplies medial cerebral hemispheres
Middle cerebral artery - supplies lateral cerebral cortex and deep white matter
Posterior communicating artery
Anastomoses between the anterior and posterior circulations
Posterior communicating arteries
Pontine arteries
- supply the anterior surface of the pons and anterior motor pathways
- very small so highly susceptible to damage
Locked in syndrome
- Damage to pontine arteries
- Cannot move body accept the eyes
Cerebellar arteries
Superior cerebellar arteries - midbrain and cerebellum
Anterior inferior cerebellar arteries - pons and cerebellum
Posterior inferior cerebellar arteries - medulla and cerebellum
Anterior spinal artery
- Supplies the anterior 2/3rds of the spinal cord
- can get stroke of the spinal cord commonly due to post surgery aneurysm
Vertebral artery
- The 2 vertebral arteries come together to form the basilar artery in the midline
- The basilar artery bifurcates to form the posterior cerebral arteries
Posterior cerebral artery
Deep branches supply the thalamus:
- thalamoperforator arteries
- thalamogeniculate arteries
- occlusion can affect samatosensation
Anterior branches run backwards supplying the midbrain and brain stem
Supplies back of cerebrum - occipital lobe and inferior temporal lobe
Occlusion can affect vision
Lenticulostriate vessels
Very small branches of the middle cerebral artery supplying the:
- caudate nucleus
- lentiform nucleus
- internal capsule
- putamen and globus pallidus
Which artery is commonly involved in stroke
Medial cerebral artery
Anterior circulation
Supplied by the internal carotid artery
Supplies most of the cerebral hemispheres
