L6 Flashcards
Comparison between the behaviors of different groups of subjects
Between-Subject Design
It has two groups, two matched groups, and Multiple Groups
Between-Subject Design
is an experimental design where different groups of participants are exposed to different levels or conditions of the independent variable. Each participant experiences only one condition, making comparisons between groups rather than within the same individuals.
Between-Subject Design
How many subject are needed for between-subject design?
At least 15-20 subject in each treatment condition. Comfortably 30 per treatment
Possible treatment condition for 2 Independent Group (Between-Subject Design)
Experimental Group - Control Group
Two Experimental Group (No control group)
gathers more precise information; different values of the IV
Two experimental group
This can only be used if there is only one IV (independent variable) and if randomized can be assumed successful
Two independent groups
This cannot be use random assignment, 2 groups of subject assigned by the researcher by equating them on a particular characteristic that might affect the D. This can only be done before or after the experiment.
Two Matched Groups
matched pairs have identical score
Precision Matching
matched pairs fall in a specified range
Range matching
subject scores are ranked; adjacent scores are paired
Rank-order Matching
This can only be used when there is a presence of a strong extraneous variables. When need for more efficient measure of the IV’s effect and when there is a very small number of subjects.
Two matched groups
Pretest selected levels of an IV before conducting the actual study
Pilot study
As a general rule, choose this so it will make an adequate test of your hypothesis.
Simplest design
How does one choose how many treatments to use?
Theoretical basis
Equal or proportional intervals
Assigning subjects
Table of random number
Use of block randomization
This is used when it takes more than two treatments conditions to make a good a test of a hypothesis
