L6 Flashcards
What are the three protective layers that surround the brain and spinal cord?
Meninges
What is cerebrospinal fluid?
Circulates between the meninges and acts as a shock absorber to protect the brain
What and where is the grey matter of the spinal cord?
In the centre, and consist of non-myelinated interneurons
Where and what is the white matter of the spinal cord?
Surrounding it, composed of myelinated nerve fibres from sensory and motor neurons
What does the forebrain consist of?
Cerebrum, thalamus, hypothalamus, and olfactory bulbs
What is the cerebrum?
Largest part of the brain, major coordinating centre which sensory and motor actions originate
What is the cerebral cortex?
The surface of the cerebrum and is composed of grey matter
What are the four lobes?
The frontal lobe, temporal lobe, occipital lobe, and the parietal lobe
Function of the frontal lobe?
They control memory, personality, and reasonable thinking. Also control voluntary motor movements
Function of the temporal lobe?
Process sound and hearing and some visual, association with visual and verbal memory and learning language
What is the functions of parietal lobe?
Receives and processes sensory info from the skin, helps to process info about the body’s orientation and position
What is the function of the occipital lobe?
Sensory areas associated with vision and interpret visualninformation
Thalamus?
Relays information from the senses
Hypothalamus?
Big role in maintaining body’s equilibrium, and direct connection to pituitary gland
Olfactory bulbs
Receive and interpret information about smell
What is the right side of the brain associated with?
Intuitive thinking and artistic ability
What is the left side of the brain associated with?
Logical ways of thinking and mathematical skills
What is the corpus collosum
It is a bundle of nerves which is responsible for communication between the two hemispheres of the brain
Midbrain
Just below the thalamus, acts as relay centre for some eye and ear reflexes
Hindbrain
Consist of cerebellum, pons and medulla oblongata
Cerebellum
Controls muscle coordination and balance
Pons
Relays information between the the cerebellum and medulla
Medulla onlongata
Controls subconscious activities
