L5 Flashcards
What are synapses
Small spaces between neurons or between neurons and effectors
What is a neurotransmitter
Chemical messenger made my neurons to carry a neural signal from one neuron to another, or from a neuron to an effector
Describe synapses
Neurotransmitters released from presynaptic neuron diffuse across synaptic cleft, bind to receptors, and depolarize dendrites on postsynaptic neuron
What is acetylcholine
Acts as an excitatory neurotransmitter by opening Na+ Chanel’s
What is cholinesterase
Enzyme released by presynaptic membrane destroys acetylcholine—> Na+ channels close —> neuron recovery stage
What do inhibitory neurotransmitters do?
Make postsynaptic membrane more permeable to K+
What is summation?
Effect produced by by accumulation of neurotransmitters from two or more neurons
What are neurotoxins?
Bacterial proteins that are exocytosed into nerve endings where they inhibit the release of essential neurotransmitters
