L5_PLUMBING SYSTEM Flashcards
rain
Storm Water
wastes from laundries, wash basins, sinks, showers, bath tubs)
Grey water
water plus human waste solid and liquid, urine, that is flushed out of toilets and urinals
Black water
any pipe which conveys the discharge of water closets, urinals, or fixtures having similar functions
Soil Pipe
a general term used for any vertical line of soil, waste, or vent piping.
Stack
a vertical soil pipe conveying fecal matter and liquid waste
Soil stack pipe
an extension of a soil or waste stack above the highest horizontal drain
connected to the stack
Stack vent
a pipe or opening used for ensuring the circulation of air in a plumbing system and for reducing to pressure exerted on trap seals
Vent
an arrangement of venting so installed that one vent pipe will serve two 2 traps.
Unit vent
that portion of a vent pipe through which liquid waste flow
Wet vent
any part of a piping system other than the main_, riser or stack.
Branch
main of any system of continuous piping is the principal artery of the system to which branches may be connected.
Main
a vent pipe connecting from a branch of the drainage system to a vent stack.
Branch vent
a pipe which conveys only liquid wastes free of fecal matter
Waste pipe
a sewer or other pipe or conduit used for conveying ground water, surface
water, waste water or sewage
Drain
A pipe or conduit for carrying sewage and waste liquids.
Sewerage
any wastewater containing
animal or vegetable
matter in suspension or
solution and may include
liquids containing
chemicals in solution .
Sewage
a comprehensive term, including all construction for collection, transportation, pumping, treatment and final disposition of waste
Sewer
a metallic sleeve, calked or otherwise, joined to. an opening in a pipe, ir.to which a plug is screwed that can be removed for the purpose of cleaning or examining the interior of the pipe
Cleanout Ferrule
A fitting or device so constructed as to prevent the passage of air, gas, and some vermin through a pipe without materially affecting the flow of sewage or waste water through it.
Trap
part of the lowest horizontal piping of a plumbing system which receives the discharge from soil, waste and other drainage pipes inside of a building and conveys it to the house sewer. It should have a slope of at least 1/4” to a foot or .006 for every .30 meter. (6mm for every 300mm)
House drain
the house sewer is that part of a plumbing system extending from a point about four (4) or five t5l feet from the inner face of the foundation wall of a
building to the junction with another sewer.
House sewer
a trap connected to lowest horizontal piping or House Drain
House trap
The primary (Fresh Air Inlet) functiOn of which is to. provide circulation of air between drainage and vent system.
Relief vent
a common sewer directly controlled by public authority to which all abutters have equal rights .of connection.
Public sewer
a suction caused by the flow of liquids in pipes
Siphonage
The end of a pipe which fits into a bell. Also a word synonymously with faucet.
Spigot
The vertical distance between the dip and crown wire of a trap.
Seal
The installation of all pipes in the plumbing system that are in partitions and under floors .
Roughing in
a pit or receptacle at a low point to which the liquid wastes are drained
Sump
a vertical opening through a building for elevators, dumbwaiters, light, ventilation, etc
Shaft
a sheet metal placed when concrete is poured to accomodate future plumbing pipes.
Sleeve
an opening or space to accommodate a group of pipes
Pipe chase
Opening for ventilation circulation of air.
Duct
water that originates from precipitation (storm),
including heavy rain and melt water from hail and snow.
Storm water
two major issues of storm water
Flooding
Water pollution
The purpose of a dam is to
impound (store) water,
wastewater or liquid borne
materials for any of several
reasons
Dams
“an area of land that is
usually saturated with water”.
Wet Land
Wetlands contribute a number of
functions that benefit people. These
are called ______
Ecosystem services
• refers to domestic wastewater generated in households or
office buildings from streams without fecal contamination,
Grey water
The separate treatment of grey water falls under the concept of ___________ , which is one principle commonly applied in ecological sanitation approaches.
The main advantage of keeping grey water separate from toilet wastewater is that the pathogen load is greatly reduced, and the grey water is therefore easier to treat and reuse
Source separation
When grey water is mixed with toilet wastewater, it is called
Sewage or black water
• in a sanitation context denotes wastewater from toilets, which likely contains pathogens which may spread by the fecal–oral route.
