Neither is destroyed, being the same type, but bucking takes place

Fold mountains i.e. The Himalayas

On faults lines in collision zones

Where is Kashmir?
In one of the most remote regions of the world, mountain environment so already fragile and susceptible to landslides etc
What makes providing aid to Kashmir difficult?
A poor, largely agricultural region that is disrupted over India and Pakistan - conflict delays aid
When did the earthquake occur in Kashmir?
A winter Saturday morning when children were at school and some adults were asleep due to it being in Ramadan
What immediate aid was provided after the earthquake?
Helicopters flew banks, tents, basic provisions and medical supplies into the area
What long-term aid was provided after the earthquake?
Volunteers form charities and health services etc.
Government can be slow in getting going and can even mishandle aid - bureaucracy can easily get in the way
What did the UN provide after the earthquake?
2.4 m blankets
1.2 m quilts
170,000 plastic sheets
200,000 tarpaulins to strengthen the tents
Other than conflict, what were the main barriers to help?
Rain and hail Harsh winter Fresh landslides Poor literacy and education Many were displaced (3.5m), injured (138,000) and killed (100,000)
