L5 sample methods Flashcards
What is generalisation?
Findings should be true of the entire target population
What is representative?
Only if the sample is typical of the target population
What is sample bias?
Any differences between the sample and the larger population
What is the target population?
The whole group of people that a study is interested in
What sample method is opportunity?
Using whoever is around at the time
What are the strengths of using opportunity sample method?
It’s quick and easy. Less time finding people
What are the weaknesses of using opportunity sample method?
Biased so not representation of target population. Can’t generalise results
What is self selected sampling method?
Using People who volunteer themselves.
What are the strengths of self selected?
Less likely to withdraw as wanted to be there. More willing to participate. Have informed consent
What are the weaknesses of self selected?
Typical as same people volunteer. Not representative. More biased. Can’t generalise results
What is the random sample method?
Everyone in a target population is out in a hat and names are randomly taken out
What are the strengths of random sampling?
Least biased. Everyone has equal chance
What are the weaknesses of random sampling?
Time consuming. Can be biased if people remove results
What is snowball sampling?
One ps asked another ps. Asks another etc
What are the strengths of snowball sampling?
Reaches people hard to access. Asks large group people
