Experimental Design Flashcards
What is experimental design?
How the participants are divided up between the conditions
What is independent measures design?
Using different pps in each condition
Strengths of independent measures design?
No order effects, used in virtually any experiment
Weaknesses of independent measures design?
Participant variables (personal differences) e.g. Darts 1 po could be better than other pps naturally
What is matched pair design?
Using different pps in each condition but these pps have been matched for important variables (characteristics) (e.g. Memory ability or iq)
Strengths matched pair design?
Control some ps variables. Pps less likely to guess study aims
Weaknesses matched pair design?
Time consuming to match pps. May not control all pp variables
What is repeated measure design?
Using the same pps in each condition
Strengths repeats measure design?
Eliminates effects of individual differences. Fewer pps required
Weaknesses repeated measure design?
Order effects, limited use
What are the three order effects?
Boredom practise and fatigue
What do researchers use to deal with order effects?
Counter balancing
What condition gets affected by order effects?
Condition 2
How are pps split? Which condition first? (Order effects)
Ps split in half. Group 1 does A then B. Group 2 does B then A
What is the design called that’s used for order effects?
Abbs
