L5: Genitourinary system Flashcards
1
Q
GU system in kids
A
- Glomerular filtration and absorption are relatively low in the infant and do not reach adult levels until the ages of 1 or 2 years.
- Glomerular epithelial cells are cuboidal
- Loop of Henle is short in newborns. Adult size and pee concentration ability reach adult levels by ~3m
- Urea synthesis and excretion are lower. Newborns retain more nitrogen and electrolytes for rapid growth
- Unable to excrete water at the same rate as adults
- Newborns are more at risk of developing severe metabolic acidosis
- Kidneys are less efficient at managing sodium deficiencies and excesses causing sodium excretion to be reduced
