Q

GU system in kids

A
  • Glomerular filtration and absorption are relatively low in the infant and do not reach adult levels until the ages of 1 or 2 years.
  • Glomerular epithelial cells are cuboidal
  • Loop of Henle is short in newborns. Adult size and pee concentration ability reach adult levels by ~3m
  • Urea synthesis and excretion are lower. Newborns retain more nitrogen and electrolytes for rapid growth
  • Unable to excrete water at the same rate as adults
  • Newborns are more at risk of developing severe metabolic acidosis
  • Kidneys are less efficient at managing sodium deficiencies and excesses causing sodium excretion to be reduced
