L5- Formula For Modernisation Flashcards
What are the 5 stages of the Rostow Model?
1) traditional society
2) Pre-condition for Take-off
3) Take-off
4) Drive to Maturity
5) High Mass consumption
Why has the Rostow Model been criticised?
It has been criticised for being just based on European countries and overlooking other ways in which a country could develop.
It also assumes that all countries start with the same resources and other geographical factors(e.g. population, climate).
Define ‘top-down projects’:
Large scale projects set up and organised by governments, often with little consultation with local communities.
Typical Top-down characteristics:
- They are very large
- They are planned by central government or NGOs
- They are expensive
- In developing countries they are frequently large-scale and involve major corporations, foreign agencies and funding.
India F1 project (Buddh International Circuit): Key Features
- Planned by central government- NGOs
- Want to close development gap
- Financial gains from track & hotels
- opened in 2011
India F1 project: Disadvantages
- Property prices rose 25%, pricing locals out of the market
- Agricultural land has now gone
- People in debt: loss of land
- Not everyone earned compensation
- Hard for the illiterate people (e.g farmers) to find well paid jobs in the area.
Typical problems of a Top-down project:
- They are frequently unsuccessful
- Local people may be consulted but they don’t drive the decision making process
- the benefits of the solution will not been seen rapidly (long term)
- the country will more than likely go into debt from the loans borrowed to fund the scheme
- jobs are not provided for the local people, instead a lot of machinery and technology is used
- the end product will be expensive to operate
What is Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs?
Created by psychologist Abraham Maslow, the hierarchy is often displayed as a pyramid, with the most basic needs at the bottom and more complex needs at the peak.
What are the 5 different levels in Maslow’s hierarchy pyramid?
(Most basic needs to more complex needs)
1) physiological : food, drink, shelter , sleep etc.
2) safety: security of health, resources; order, law, limits, stability.
3) Love & belonging: work group, family affection, relationship.
4) Esteem: achievement, status, dominance etc.
5) self- actualisation: self- fulfilment, realising personal potential

Also a 45 min drive away from Taj Mahal: can attract a lot of tourists.
What is the F1 Buddh International Circuit?

From the Rostow Model describe the traditional society (first) stage:
Based on subsistence; farming, fishing, forestry, some mining etc.
From the Rostow Model describe the Pre-conditions for take-off stage:
Building infrastructure that is needed before development can take place, e.g. transport network , communications, money from farming and power supplies.
