L5: Diabetes Flashcards
What prevents insulin from acting on the cell to initiate glucose uptake?
Insulin receptors become resistant to insulin binding.
What is the diagnostic for diabetes?
> 7 mmol/L of fasting (8hrs) glucose or two hour glucose concentration >11.1mmol/L after consumption of 75g of oral glucose.
How is Hba1c used to identify diabetes?
Hba1c is a measurement of glycated haemoglobin and measures the amount of glucose which has adhered to the haemoglobin molecules. Hba1c concentration is directly correlated to blood glucose concentrations of 12 weeks due to Redblood cells having a life of around 12 weeks (3 months). Useful in identifying long term glucose concentrations.
What diagnostic measurement of Hba1c is used to identify diabetes?
44mmol/mol (6.5%)
